Class III Hospital Lift Dimensions
Under ISO 4190-1 a healthcare lift is a Class III lift. What sizes the car is not the passenger count but the bed: its length, plus the space an attendant needs to walk beside it, plus the equipment that travels with the patient. The three configurations below cover most hospital projects.
| Rated load | Car width (CW) | Car depth (CD) | Car area | EN 81-20 Table 6 limit | Persons | Clear door width |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,600 kg | 1,400 mm | 2,400 mm | 3.36 m² | 3.56 m² | 21 | 1,300 mm |
| 2,000 kg | 1,500 mm | 2,700 mm | 4.05 m² | 4.20 m² | 26 | 1,300 mm |
| 2,500 kg | 1,800 mm | 2,700 mm | 4.86 m² | 5.00 m² | 33 | 1,400 mm |
ISO 4190-1 explains what each size is for: a 1,600 kg car is primarily suitable for moving hospital beds of 900 × 2,000 mm; a 2,000 kg car suits beds of 1,000 × 2,300 mm with attendants but without ancillary medical equipment; and a 2,500 kg car carries a 1,000 × 2,300 mm bed together with ancillary medical equipment and attendants. A stretcher fits a smaller car than an ICU bed, and an ICU bed with a ventilator and infusion stands fits neither.
Why the car cannot simply be made larger
Car area is capped by the standard, not by preference. EN 81-20 Table 6 fixes the maximum available car area for each rated load, so that a car cannot be filled beyond the load its components were designed for. Every configuration above sits inside that limit, with the margin shown in the table. Asking for a wider car at the same rated load is not a commercial negotiation; it changes the rated load, and with it the machine, the ropes, the guide rails and the buffers.
Doors, thresholds and car height
Clear door width is the dimension that decides whether a bed turns into the car at all. A 1,300 mm clear opening handles a standard bed; intensive-care beds and wide equipment trolleys need 1,400 mm. Door height is 2,100 mm. Doors are automatic, either centre-opening in four panels or telescopic in two or three panels, because a bed being pushed diagonally through a narrow leaf catches on the frame. Sills are set flush so that castors do not jolt a patient.
Nazar Elevator builds Class III cars with a 2,300 mm clear internal height rather than the usual passenger figure, because infusion stands, monitors and lifting poles travel upright with the patient.
National codes add their own minimums. Several countries set a mandatory stretcher-lift size and a minimum clear door width for buildings above a given height, and those minimums can exceed the figures above. Tell us the country and the building height and we will confirm which configuration satisfies the local requirement.
