Machine Room (MR) Elevator

Elevator systems with a dedicated machine room — proven reliability, high load and speed capability, easy maintenance access.

A machine room (MR) elevator is a traction lift whose drive machine, controller and governor are installed in a dedicated room, normally directly above the hoistway. Nazar Elevator manufactures MR systems for rated loads of 320 to 2500 kg and speeds up to 4.0 m/s, in conformity with EN 81-20 and EN 81-50.

How does a MR elevator work?

The traction machine drives a sheave over which the suspension ropes run. One end carries the car, the other a counterweight that offsets the car weight plus roughly half the rated load. Because the machine sits in its own room, larger geared or gearless machines can be used, and noise and vibration are structurally separated from the shaft.

The controller cabinet, overspeed governor and main switch are installed in the same room, which makes inspection, adjustment and component replacement straightforward for the maintenance technician.

When should you specify a MR elevator?

  • Buildings above roughly 15–20 floors, where speeds over 2.5 m/s are required
  • Rated loads above 1600 kg — freight, hospital bed and vehicle lifts
  • High duty cycle installations such as hospitals, hotels and offices with heavy traffic
  • Modernisation of an existing shaft that already has a machine room
  • Projects where the lowest possible equipment cost matters more than floor area
