Safety gear is a mechanical braking device mounted on the car frame (and sometimes the counterweight frame) that clamps onto the guide rails to stop the elevator car if the suspension rope breaks or the car speed exceeds the governor trip level. Two types exist: instantaneous safety gear (for speeds up to 0.63 m/s), which stops the car abruptly, and progressive safety gear (for higher speeds), which applies a controlled deceleration force. Safety gear must be capable of stopping the car with the rated load at the design overspeed without exceeding deceleration limits.
