Travel distance, also called rise or lift travel, is the vertical distance between the lowest and highest floor levels served by an elevator, measured between the finished floor surfaces. It is a key parameter for selecting the elevator drive system, rope length, compensation rope requirement, and shaft structural design. Elevators with travel distances exceeding 30 m typically require compensation ropes or chains. High-rise installations (100 m+) require special high-speed systems with dedicated rope and guide rail engineering.
