Compensation ropes (or chains) are installed in high-rise elevators to compensate for the difference in weight of the suspension ropes on either side of the sheave as the elevator car travels up and down. Without compensation, the rope weight imbalance increases as the car travels, requiring the motor to work harder. Compensation ropes hang below the car and counterweight and loop at the pit level, effectively balancing the system at all travel positions. They are typically required for elevators with a travel distance exceeding 30 meters.
