Automatic Rescue Device (ARD)

Elevator Glossary

An Automatic Rescue Device (ARD) is an emergency battery-powered system installed in elevators to automatically move a trapped car to the nearest floor and open the doors in the event of a mains power failure. ARD systems are essential for passenger safety and are required by modern elevator safety standards. The device activates within seconds of detecting a power outage, preventing passengers from being stranded between floors.
