The door operator is the electromechanical drive unit mounted on top of the elevator cabin that opens and closes the car doors and, through the door coupler mechanism, simultaneously operates the landing doors at each floor. Modern door operators use variable-frequency drives for smooth, quiet, and precise door movement. They include safety edges or light curtains to detect obstructions and reverse door movement to prevent entrapment. Door operator speed and timing are programmable parameters.
