Dumbwaiter

Elevator Glossary

A dumbwaiter is a small freight elevator designed to carry goods (not people) between floors in buildings such as restaurants, hotels, hospitals, and libraries. Dumbwaiters typically have limited load capacities (50–300 kg) and small cabin dimensions, and operate at low speeds. They are used to transport food, laundry, documents, medicine, and other materials efficiently between floors without requiring manual carrying. Modern dumbwaiters use electric traction or hydraulic drive systems and comply with applicable safety standards.
