Geared Traction Machine

Elevator Glossary

A geared traction machine is an elevator drive unit where the motor drives the sheave through a gearbox (typically a worm gear). The gearbox reduces the motor speed to achieve the required rope speed and increases the output torque. Geared machines are typically used for elevator speeds up to 1.6 m/s and are more economical than gearless machines. However, they require more maintenance due to gear lubrication, and they are generally less energy-efficient than gearless alternatives.
