Gearless Traction Machine

Elevator Glossary

A gearless traction machine is an elevator drive unit where the motor directly drives the sheave without a gearbox. These PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) or asynchronous motors operate at low RPM and high torque, eliminating gear losses and providing superior energy efficiency, quiet operation, and longer service life. Gearless machines are standard for high-speed elevators (above 1.6 m/s) and are increasingly used in all speed ranges. MRL elevators always use gearless traction machines due to their compact form factor.
