Machine Room Less (MRL)

Elevator Glossary

Machine Room Less (MRL) is an elevator design where all drive and control equipment is installed within the elevator shaft itself — eliminating the need for a separate machine room above the shaft. MRL elevators use compact gearless traction machines mounted at the top of the shaft or on the shaft wall. The control panel is housed in a control cabinet adjacent to the shaft at the top floor. MRL technology reduces building construction costs, allows more architectural freedom, and is the dominant design for modern mid-rise commercial and residential elevators.
