The machine room is the dedicated room, usually located at the top of the elevator shaft or adjacent to it, that houses the traction machine, control panel, governor, and other drive equipment. Machine room dimensions and access requirements are defined in EN 81-20. Machine rooms require proper lighting, temperature control (typically 5–40°C), ventilation, and fire protection. In traditional elevator designs, a machine room is a separate construction requirement; in MRL (machine room less) elevators, this space is eliminated.
