A guide shoe is a sliding component fixed to the car frame and counterweight that runs along the guide rails and keeps the car aligned in the shaft. Sliding shoes use a replaceable insert of nylon or similar low-friction material and are typically specified for speeds up to about 1.0 m/s. Above that speed roller guides are normally used instead, because sliding shoes generate more noise and wear. Guide shoe clearance directly affects ride comfort and lateral vibration.
