EN 81-70

Elevator Glossary

EN 81-70 is the European standard covering accessibility to lifts for persons including persons with disability. It defines three minimum car sizes, the smallest being 1000 by 1250 millimetres with an 800 millimetre door, sufficient for a wheelchair user. The standard also sets requirements for button height and tactile marking, Braille, audible floor announcements, handrails, mirrors and door dwell time. Compliance with EN 81-70 is mandatory for public buildings in most European markets and is increasingly specified in tenders worldwide.
