EN 81-72 is the European standard for firefighters lifts, defining the additional requirements that let a lift be used by fire services during a building fire. It requires a protected lobby, a minimum rated load of 630 kilograms, a car of at least 1100 by 1400 millimetres, a two-hour power supply from a protected source, water-resistant equipment in the shaft and a firefighters switch at the access level. A firefighters lift must also reach the topmost floor within 60 seconds of leaving the fire service access level.
