Rated Load (Capacity)

Elevator Glossary

The rated load is the maximum mass (in kilograms) for which the elevator is designed and built to carry. For passenger elevators, the rated load determines the minimum cabin floor area as specified in EN 81-20 (e.g., 8 persons = 630 kg requires a minimum of 1.45 m² floor area). The elevator must be capable of safely starting, running, stopping, and holding the rated load under all specified conditions. Common rated loads range from 320 kg (4 persons) for residential elevators to 2,000 kg or more for large passenger or freight elevators.
