EN 81-80 (SNEL)

Elevator Glossary

EN 81-80 is the European standard for improving the safety of existing passenger and goods passenger lifts, known as SNEL — Safety Norm for Existing Lifts. Instead of requiring an old lift to meet the current construction standard outright, it assesses the installation against a list of known hazardous situations and ranks them by risk, so that limited budget goes to the most serious first. The current edition is EN 81-80:2019, which lists 85 hazardous situations; the superseded 2003 edition listed 74, which is why the lower figure still circulates. It is the appropriate technical reference for a modernization, whereas EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 apply to newly installed lifts.
