2:1 roping (two-to-one roping) is an elevator suspension arrangement where the hoisting ropes are attached to a fixed point (dead end hitch) and pass under a pulley on the car, up over the drive sheave, down under a pulley on the counterweight, and back to a fixed point. This halves the rope speed relative to the car speed (and doubles the load on the ropes and sheave bearings) but also halves the torque required from the drive machine. 2:1 roping is commonly used for heavy-load freight elevators and low-speed hydraulic elevator adaptations.
