Rope fastening is the termination that connects the suspension ropes to the car frame and counterweight. The most common type is the wedge socket, in which the rope is looped around a tapered wedge that tightens under load. Each rope termination must withstand at least 80 percent of the minimum breaking load of the rope under EN 81-20. Terminations are fitted with springs to equalise tension between ropes and with a secondary retention so that a loosened wedge cannot release the rope.
